CHARLOTTE SORAPURE & SAIED DAI: UNTOLD STORIES

20- 30 May

Charlotte and Saied have been pillars of the figurative art establishment in our country for some decades now. We have known their paintings well since we founded our gallery at the turn of the millenium. Throughout the ensuing quarter of a century they have exhibited regularly at all the principle public painting societies and major portrait art prizes Britain has to offer. A true artistic power couple, they have garnered numerous major awards and won portrait commissions from the highest in the land. We were delighted to begin showing their work early last year and it is the fulfilment of a long held ambition to now offer a small two-man exhibition here at our Pall Mall gallery.

Charlotte attended Bournemouth and Poole College of Art and Design, after which she was awarded a BA at Cheltenham and Gloucester College of Art and Design. She then went on to study at the Royal Academy of Arts under the keepership of Norman Adams RA, where she received a Post Graduate Diploma in Painting. She has exhibited widely in the UK and abroad and is the recipient of numerous prizes. Her list of portrait commissions include that of the war photographer Don McCullin for The Holburne Museum and her work is included in a large number of both private and corporate collections.
Saied Dai was born in Iran and came to England at the age of six. He trained at Bournemouth and Poole College of Art and Design and later at the Royal Academy Schools under luminaries such as Peter Greenham RA and Norman Blamey RA. Here the diverse and demanding disciplines, all grounded in drawing and structure, left an indelible mark. Saied was so highly regarded he was invited back to the Royal Academy Schools to teach under Leonard McComb’s keepership. He was elected to the Royal Society of Portrait Painters in 2004 and has won several awards, the most recent of which were The Ondaatje Prize in 2021 and 2006 as well as The William Lock Portrait Prize in 2023, for the most timeless portrait with a feeling for paint and its aesthetic potential. He also recently completed a portrait of The Rt Hon Theresa May MP for the Houses of Parliament.
