Ian comes from Tummel Bridge in the heart of rural Perthshire - often reflected in his choice of subject. He studied painting in Edinburgh School of Art from 1976-81 and since then has taken part in multiple RSW and RSW shows; his work appearing in public collections - particularly in Perth (his home city) but also in Edinburgh. It is important to Ian that - although his images are immediately recognisable and meaningful to the viewer - there is also always a substantial simplification and abstraction involved in the composition that makes it enjoyable to play around with, giving him the freedom and choices he enjoys - that hopefully result in a style he can call his own.
