About Daphne Charlton (1909–1991)

>Charlton was born near York and studied at the Slade School of Fine Art from 1927. Whilst studying there she was tutored by the painter George Charlton (brother of Evan qv) whom she married two years later. The couple settled in Hampstead and the arrival of Stanley Spencer to stay in the Charlton household in 1939 sparked an affair that saw Daphne become a significant muse in his work of the period. Spencer’s portrait of her in an elaborate hat painted in 1940 is one of his best-known Tate works. The unlikely menage a trois spent the early years of the war on an extended holiday in Gloucestershire. Her connection to Spencer and her frequent appearance in so many of his major works of the period has rather overshadowed her own artistic career but she was acknowledged as a fine painter with a knack for capturing the personality of her sitters. The Burgh House & Hampstead Museum in London holds several works by her.
