An Endless Summer is a body of work selected from two of years of travel – a paint-safari from the Cornish coast through Spain and Italy and down to the shores of North Africa. My mission: to paint a scene in as direct an expression of light, colour and form as the chosen medium will allow and preferably in the fairest possible conditions!
The subjects betray a certain romantic notion on my part, where the shifting tides of empires, civilisations and trading routes are marked on the buildings rendered, such as the great mosque- cathedral at Cordoba, the fortified sea walls of Essaouira, and the mercantile palaces of Venice. On the Costa Brava I recall a more leisurely era, reflected in the whitewashed facades of Cadaques and Calella de Palafrugel. These were the summertime haunts of Salvador Dali and his surrealist entourage and a care-free destination for the generations of holidaymakers who followed.
The great bridges of Ronda in Andalusia, and Besalu near the Pyrenees, are marvels of engineering, and suitably challenging for the draftsman, whilst the water gardens of the Alcazar in Seville and the courtyards of Cordoba were a joy to behold.
