SOPHIE DICKENS: OUT OF THE WOODS

1ST - 10TH OCTOBER IN PALL MALL

Out of the Woods is conceived as a great rewilding of Panter & Hall’s elegant gallery in Pall Mall. The animals and birds have shunned pedestals, and are climbing up the shelves and running across the floor.

Sophie grew up in the Hampshire countryside of Southern England, surrounded by dogs, cows and horses. She studied history of art at the Courtauld Institute in central London, and remained 1n the city for the next 30 years on the borders of Islington and Hackney. Her art historical connections led her to a very brief job in a West End gallery, before realising that she had to become an artist. Always an outsider, she studied anatomy at London University and modelling, welding and life drawing at the John Cass School of Art. She remains inspired by the human figure, the natural world and the traditional language of the history of classical art.

She lives and works in Liguria, using a very particular style of cutting and assembling curved pieces of recycled wood to create figurative sculptures that burst with muscular energy. These are often editioned in bronze, and can be found all over the world.
