This collection of work is inspired by the idea of family treasures. Items that have
travelled through generations, sometimes deliberately, mostly not. They do not
necessarily need to be of great value. They are treasures because of the meaning
they hold within a family. Their original owner may even be largely forgotten, just a
name.
Some of my subject matter belongs to my family, some to the family of friends and
some has been discovered in flea markets and antique fairs. This does not matter;
it is familiar commonplace objects that I am drawn to. Their familiarity allows for
the imaginative leap to find meaning in them.
My subjects have an intrinsic beauty, but this is not the only reason for me to paint
them. They need to speak of the past with an emotional echo that I recognise. The
weighty feel in my hand of a much-used scratched silver spoon, the careful folds
of a letter written in haste years ago. By holding and studying these commonplace
objects I gain a physical connection to those from the past. I also glimpse the
transient nature of life itself.
