Carl is a London-based figurative painter whose work is based on London and Japan. After graduating in Fine Art from the Slade School of Fine Art, he took the Drawing Year at the Royal Drawing School and subsequently a MFA and doctorate in Painting at Tokyo University of Fine Arts, Japan. He has been selected for the BP Portrait Award on four occasions at the National Portrait Gallery, winning the Travel Award in 20212. He is a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy Sumer Exhibition and the Royal Society of Portrait Painters. He has exhibited very year at theFlowers gallery in London since 2017. Permanent public collections include The Royal Collection (commissioned by HRH King Charles), University College London Art Museum, Tokyo Geidai Art Museum Japan, Singer and Friedlander Bank London, The Shizuoka City Tokaido Hiroshige Museum Japan, and Foundation Carmignac Paris. He has been commissioned to make paintings for the restaurants Bob Bob Ricard and Kioku by Endo. He spent a decade living in Japan where he was artist in residence in Hiroshima (to make portraits of survivors of the atomic bomb) and also at the Formula 1 races in Shizuoka. He is also the winner of The Sunday Times Watercolour Competition and The Nomura Art Prize Japan, amongst other.
