"Commissioned portraiture has always been an enjoyable and important part of my painting practice. Portrait painting, to a degree, is about human connection and understanding.
A good portrait is very much a collaboration between the painter and the sitter. I really like talking through ideas for compositions and whilst of course it is important to produce a portrait that the client is happy with, it is also a chance for me to create a good piece of painting that exists in its own right.
A commissioned portrait is often associated with those in office, academia or an institution but I am increasingly finding that this is not the case anymore. I have painted a wide spectrum of people and I find this variety incredibly rewarding. The appreciation of portraiture continues to be a very universal one and the recording of a life in paint still remains compelling and fascinating even in the face of a constantly changing artistic landscape."
