About Amy Millar Watt (1900–1957)

Watt studied under Fred Shelley at Plymouth School of Art and later at St Martin’s School of Art, London, where she met John Millar Watt, who attended the same even ing classes. At the time they both worked for advertising agencies as staff artists. Marrying in 1923, the couple moved to Dedham in Essex. Her husband had found early commer cial success with his cartoon strip POP, and he was able to design and build a modern house and studio overlooking Dedham Vale. Here they became friends and sketching companions of Alfred Munnings and his wife. Amy was a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy (her work was hung in the Summer Exhibition almost continually from 1929 to 1953) and also at the Paris Salon where she had Honourable Mention.
