Sandy Murphy 11th - 27th October 2006 Sandy studied at Glasgow School of Art under James Robertson, Duncan Shanks and Barbara Rae. He is known throughout Scotland for his very painterly works of art, building layers of oil into a rich, luxuriant surface texture that adds a third dimension to the viewer's experience. This seductive use of the brush is particularly reminiscent of Joan Eardley's Catterline landscapes; as with many of the best painters of his generation, it is the influence of her work along with that of Sir William Gillies that is most discernable in Sandy's oils. In the gallery's opinion, Sandy Murphy is of the most important oil painters working in the country today. His work is consistently excellent and very affordable, Sandy is by no means a prolific painter and the opportunity to buy an example of his work should not be missed. |
