Vanessa Bowman studied at Winchester School of Art, graduating in 1993 with a degree in Printed Textile Design.
She has developed a distinctive voice as a painter of still lifes of elegant clarity, incisive design and a flair for often absorbingly original juxtapositions of flowers, fruits and diverse artefacts. Usually laid out, with no recessive perspective, on flat ivory, cream or dove-grey tabletops tilted towards the viewer. She takes an almost Orientalist pleasure in elucidating the spacing and intervals between the objects in the composition.
In these recent paintings she employs a gamut of strong colours, sometimes choosing interplays of a full range of opposing hues and at other times embracing a limited palette, exploring as it were, the very nature of colour.
