Our Pall Mall Gallery will be closed this bank holiday but Cecil Court will open Saturday to Monday
We hadn’t planned this rather impromptu exhibition until March this year, not through disorganisation or lack of a gallery program but due to a frustrating experience with the American Customs Service. We regularly attend the New York Affordable Art Fair in the Spring and happily see off a large packing crate full of paintings by sea, six weeks prior to the fair. The case duly arrived dockside, New York, the weekend before the Wednesday fair opening. Thereafter matters grew hazy, descending into farce, as it became increasingly apparent that the crate would not clear customs let alone arrive at the fair before it closed on the Sunday. Despite a blizzard of increasingly desperate emails, all parties – shippers, agents, customs officials and local carriers – loudly proclaimed no fault, presumably with half an eye to the insurance wrangle to come. Needless-to-say, Tiffany and Evie put on the best British front, printing images of the languishing stock and filling the stand with pot plants and a small collection of works hastily borrowed from our New York artist David FeBland.
Having hung the most minimal stand in the history of the Affordable Art Fair organisation and with a crate of fresh paintings steaming their way back to the UK, we felt it would be a great shame not to give the ready-made exhibition the exposure it deserved, albeit on the wrong continent.
So here it is, the PH2 stand at the Spring Edition of the New York Affordable Art Fair, without having to spend three hours at American immigration control.
