Christopher Miers is a gentleman painter of the old school who has made a name for himself professionally in that rather unfashionable arena of the art world, representational painting. He works plein-air, so practicalities dictate that most of his paintings are small-scale. These carefully-considered, often intense oils have become his trademark - easy to spot at public exhibitions and even easier to find a space for in a London apartment!
Above all, Christopher is a landscape painter. In this show, his largest to date with Panter & Hall, over a hundred paintings record his travels to Cornwall and the Cape, visits to Venice and India, and a seasonal journey through the London parks and the Thames at Fulham, Hammersmith and Windsor.
Each view has a timeless, pastoral quality influenced by centuries of British landscape painting. Christopher's distinctive, gentle palette adds a contemplative element to his views, and the sense of affection for the allotments opposite his London home or the calm of the home park at Windsor from his canal boat on the Thames is palpable. As the late Victor Pasmore RA said of his paintings, they have "a rare intimacy and refined sensibility".
Ken Howard, an old friend from their time together in Northern Ireland in the 1970s, has said "Christopher's work makes the ordinary extraordinary, whether it be an allotment, a stretch of the river at Putney or an everyday coastal scene. He makes us see what we would otherwise take for granted and in this way, he enhances our lives through his painting".
Christopher's work is held in the permanent collections of the Imperial War Museum and the House of Commons, and in numerous private collections worldwide, including that of the Sultan of Oman and the Provost of Eton.
Christopher was born in 1941 and served as a regular officer in The Royal Green Jackets until retiring as a lieutenant-colonel in 1985 to become Secretary of the Arts Club, Dover Street, London. He is an elected member of the Royal Society of British Artists (Trustee 1998-2005), the Chelsea Art Society and the Small Paintings Group. He has been a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition for some thirty years.
