David McBeth Sutherland RSA (1883-1973)

A painter, muralist and art teacher Sutherland studied at the Royal Institution School of Art in Edinburgh.  In 1911 he was awarded the Carnegie travelling scholarship to Paris and then to Spain.  He taught at Edinburgh College of art, and from 1933 to 1948 was Head of Gray's School of Art in Aberdeen.  He was appointed official war artist during the Second World War.
