Elliott Seabrooke PLG (1886 - 1950)

A remarkable man Seabrooke combined two very successful careers, both as a painter and as an actor - on stage and later on film. He studied at the Slade under Henry Tonks before joining the Red Cross during the Great War. Although a pacifist and officially a War Artist, Seabrooke was awarded Italy's highest award for bravery on the Italian Front. He appeared on stage with Gielgud, Richardson, Thorndike and Charles Laughton, an evening career he preferred as it left the days free for painting. He exhibited regularly at the New English Art Club and the London Group of which he was elected President in the 1940s. After hsi death several memorial exhibitions were held during the 1950s, notably at the Leicester Galleries and the Arts Council. Permanent collections include the Imperial War Museum, the Arts Council and the Tate.
