Anne Estelle Rice (1877-1959) Although born in Philadelphia, USA Rice is very closely associated with the Scottish Colourists. After 1906 she settled in Paris where she became friendly with Picasso, S J Peploe and J D Ferguson amongst many others. Moving to London in 1913 Rice began designing for theatre and illustrated for several authors including D H Lawrence. She showed regularly at Wildenstein and her portrait of the author Katherine Mansfield is in the National Gallery, New Zealand. A retrospective was held at the University of Hull in 1969.
