John Piper CH LS (1903-1992) One of the best loved British artists of the last century, Piper studied at Richmond School of Art and the Royal College of Art in the 1920s. In 1927 he met Braque and Henry Moore and in 1934 began to make abstract constructions, becoming a member, and subsequently secretary of the 7 & 5 Society. By 1936 Piper had returned to figurative painting and in 1940 he worked on the Recording Britain scheme and painted scenes of war damaged churches for the War Artist's Advisory Committee, becoming an Official War Artist in 1944. His commissions in the 1940's included a series of works of Windsor Castle for HM The Queen. He has exhibited extensively, holding solo exhibitions from 1933 in many leading London galleries and his work is represented widely in public collections including the Tate Gallery where a retrospective was held in 1983.
