Watercolour, 16" x 15"

Paul Lucien Maze DCM MM (1887-1979)

Maze was born at Le Havre, the son of Anglo-French parents. Settling in Paris he met and befriended Derain, de Segonzac and Edward Vuillard. In fact it was Vuillard who persuaded him to attempt pastel painting, the medium for which Maze is perhaps best known. After exhibiting in France he was given his first solo exhibition at the Independent Gallery in 1925. After the Second World War Maze settled again in England and became a great friend and painting adviser to Sir Winston Churchill. From the first show Maze exhibited regularly at a number of major commercial art galleries in London, Paris and America. In London he had shows at Marlborough and a major retrospective 'Paul Maze & The Guards' at Wildensteins in 1973. Maze's fascinating life was reviewed in Anne Singer's biography 'Paul Maze - the Lost Impressionist'.
