Laurence Stephen Lowry RA RBA LG NS (1887-1976) Born in Manchester Lowry became famous as a painter of northern industrial and back street urban scenes populated with 'matchstick' figures. He studied under William Fitz before attending classes at the Municipal College of Art and finally attended Salford School of Art. During his career Lowry exhibited widely and a major retrospective of his work was held at the Royal Academy following his death in 1976.
