'Lucy Ashton and the Master of Ravenswood'

(from the Bride of Lammermoor by Sir Walter Scott) Oil on panel 16" x 13"

Alexander Johnston (1815-1891)

Born in Edinburgh, Johnston studied at the Trustee's Academy from 1831 to 1834 before moving to London, where he remained for the rest of his career.  He painted historical subjects which Caw describes as 'austere and grave in feeling and dwelling upon the pathos of life'.
