Born in Dalry in Ayrshire, Houston specialised in landscapes of Ayrshire and Argyllshire in an impressionist style. He exhibited a the Royal Scottish Academy, Royal Glasgow Institute, the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool and the Fine Art Society.
