Edward Jeffrey Irving Ardizzone CBE RA (1900-1979) Best known as a book illustrator, lithographer, watercolourist and writer for children. Ardizzone was born in Haiphong, Indo-China and later studied under Bernard Meninsky and Walter Bayes at Westminister School of Art. He served as an Official War Artist and later taught at Camberwell and the Royal College of Art. He was represented by Leger Galleries and after 1958 by the Mayor Gallery. He was appointed Royal Designer for Industry in 1974 and in the same year a retrospective of his work was held at the Victoria and Albert Museum.
