Johnny Romeo is an internationally acclaimed Australian painter. Considered Australia’s foremost Pop artist, he is leading the global charge of Neo-Expressionist Pop art with his exhilaratingly colourful collision of rock’n’roll swagger, comic book aesthetics, Neo-Expressionism, Grindhouse intensity and street art. Described by GQ Magazine Australia as ‘part punk, part pop’, Romeo fuses vibrant Technicolour imagery with urban grittiness.
Johnny Romeo’s work critiques the madness of a modern world driven by pervasive advertising, hollow materialism and wasteful excess. Armed with tongue-in-cheek humour and sharp social commentary, Romeo explores the way in which we construct our identities through the idolisation of pop culture and brand-name heroes.
Romeo is represented by many of Australia’s top galleries. He has had a number of consecutive sell-out exhibitions across Sydney, Perth, the Gold Coast, Alice Springs, Darwin and New Zealand. His work has also caught the attention of publications such as the Sydney Morning Herald, Vogue, Grazia, Australian Art Collector and the Australian Art Review, as well as the ABC 7:30 Report, SBS and Foxtel Australian arts channel STUDIO.
With celebrated and sell-out shows in New York, Los Angeles and Pennsylvania in 2013, Johnny Romeo has generated massive international buzz. His works have also featured in high-profile group shows like the URBAN POP II Survey in LA and UPRISING in Pennsylvania. Romeo is has make a huge splash in the European and Asian art scenes with major debut shows in Paris and Singapore.
Romeo recently completed a collaborative project with American punk band Blink-182, one of the biggest names in rock music today.
Johnny Romeo’s paintings have become highly collectible; with a recent square metre work ‘DOVE LOVE (Marilyn Monroe)’ selling at a December 2013 auction in Singapore for $18,000.00 (AUD). His collectors include major Hollywood stars such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert Gossett and many others.
