Alexander Milligan Galt (1913-2000) RGI
Born in Greenock, the seventh child of a Glasgow brass founder, Galt enrolled at Glasgow School of Art in 1930. A brilliant draughtsman, his friend David Donaldson said he could “out Orpen Orpen” and his tutors nicknamed him ‘the human camera’. He was awarded the Carnegie Travelling Scholarship and the Torrance Award in the late 1930s. After such a prodigious early career Galt slipped into relative obscurity due to the pressures of keeping a young family in the austerity of 1950s Glasgow and his experiences flying missions in the RAF.
